Characteristics of Black Walnut Flooring

Found commonly throughout the eastern United States, Black Walnut wood is heavy, sturdy, and stiff. Walnut is one of the most durable of the domestic commercial woods, which makes it a favorable hardwood flooring in Scottsdale. There is a wide color range in the Black Walnut timber, ranging from a light blonde to a rich, dark, chocolate-brown to a purplish black.

This wood is special not only for it’s unique coloring, but also in the unique variations in grain. The grain of the walnut is typically open and straight. However, it is likely to find some boards with a curly grain pattern, which makes it popular among designers and decorators.

Thickness, Finishes and Price

All hardwood is available in various thicknesses (with ¾, 5/16, 3/8, and ½ inch thick being among the most common), widths, and grades. You can choose from prefinished walnut, a factory-applied stain and finish coat, or unfinished flooring that requires sanding and stain application. You can also choose from solid walnut flooring, 100% hardwood and milled from walnut trees, or engineered walnut flooring, 100% wood with a top layer of black walnut hardwood.

Prices for black walnut flooring, including options of solid and engineered flooring or prefinished and unfinished, vary. Homeowners looking to buy Scottsdale hardwood flooring can expect to pay $4 to $9 per square foot for the flooring itself and an additional $1 to $4 per square foot for installation ($5 to $13 per square foot total, or $1,000-$2,600 for a 10’ x 20’ room).
